Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, 4th Edition (OSPD4)This Volume is the successor to OSPD3, though being just newly released it has not gained full acceptance in the Scrabble-playing world as yet. This acceptance, however, is inevitable and without any doubt this Fourth Edition will be the pre-eminent reference for North American players and several online Scrabble game sites, superceding OSPD3, very shortly. Our recommendation must be to choose this latest edition instead of the better known but quickly becoming redundant OSPD3. Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, 3rd Edition (OSPD3)Formerly the official reference for North American games. No longer an "official" publication as such, having been superceded by TWL98/OWL (which is only available to Members of the North American National Scrabble Association), but still an essential reference. OSPD3 is still widely used as the official reference for a number of internet-based online Scrabble games sites. OSPD3 (as a very close substitute for the harder-to-obtain TWL98/OWL) is also widely used throughout the world in conjunction with the English OSW4, to form the SOWPODS reference authority, though we expect OSPD4 to quickly supercede OSPD3 in this, and every other respect, very swiftly. Chambers Official Scrabble Words International (OSWI)This volume is for SOWPODS Players, combining the word lists of the North American OSPD3/TWL and the former UK reference Chambers OSW4 (Official Scrabble Words 4th Edition). The Worldwide copyright holders (excluding North America) of Scrabble, JW Spears & Co (a subsidiary of Mattel) has recently dumped Chambers as their "official" publisher in favour of the larger dictionary publisher, Collins. Collins will be releasing their own edition of Official Scrabble Words International in mid 2005. However, at this stage, not a single national Scrabble association anywhere in the world has adopted the Collins version. This Chambers version presently remains the only official SOWPODS reference source. It is logical to assume that this will change at some point over the next couple of years. Purchasers in a hurry may prefer to purchase this title (and pay a little extra for postage charges) from the UK section of our Scrabble Market Place (where the upcoming Collins version may also be pre-ordered) as delivery time for this title from the USA is very slow. Everything Scrabble - Joe Edley & John WilliamsAn official publication of the (North American) National Scrabble Association, this useful book introduces Scrabble players to techniques and strategies. The word lists included are only suitable for OSPD & TWL players - definitely not compatable for the more international SOWPODS games played throughout the rest of the English speaking world. If you are an OSPD / TWL Scrabble player, you will definitely want this book. To some degree it overlaps with our own Scrabble® Bonus Word Techniques ebook, but the two have sufficient differences in emphasis as to necessitate any serious Scrabble player under OSPD / TWL rules buying both. SOWPODS players should give "Everything Scrabble" a miss and instead check the UK section of our Scrabble Market Place for a similar SOWPODS-relevant publication, entitled: "How to Win at Scrabble" by Andrew Fisher & David Webb. Word Freak: Heartbreak, Triumph, Genius, and Obsession in the World of Competitive Scrabble Players - Stefan FatsisLike a cross between a linguistic spy and a lexicographic Olympic athlete, journalist Stefan Fatsis gave himself a year to penetrate the highest echelons of international Scrabble competition. Word Freak is the account of his journey. It's a wacky grab bag of travelogue, history, party journal, and psychological study of the misfits and goofballs whose lives are measured out in Scrabble tiles. Fatsis gives us all the facts about Scrabble--from the story of the down-on-his-luck architect who invented the game in the 1930s to the intricacies of individual international competitions and the corporate wars to control the world's favorite word game. He keeps the reader turning the pages as we get involved in the lives of the Scrabble obsessives: men and women who have a point to prove against the world and have chosen Scrabble as their playground and their pulpit. As Fatsis goes on his own quest to attain the coveted 1600 rating, we actually get obsessed with him as he lies awake at night pondering moves and memorizing lists of words.
